DIY: Ribbon rainbow rings
Color the wind with a rainbow!
Colorful and optimistic, rainbows are all kinds of happy combined together for a few perfect moments. It’s not surprising that so many cultures have their own stories about rainbows - from pots of gold (Irish) to sky tapestries woven by the south winds (ancient Arabians), to painting the colors of the wind (Disney’s Pocahontas). In Jewish culture, the very first rainbow appears in the story of Noah - as a promise that there will never again be a flood to destroy the earth.
It’s fun to capture the wonder and imagination of seeing a rainbow with a DIY craft! Whether you are chasing the winds, or using a rainbow as a bowl to paint the world (Germanic), or even making a promise, you can create a ribbon rainbow ring to add a little color, delight and happiness into your day.
For each ribbon rainbow ring, you will need one shower curtain ring and 48” stands of multi-colored ribbons and sheer tule in different widths. Fold each ribbon in half and place the loop on top of the ring with the ends hanging down. Take the ends of the ribbon and insert them around the ring, into the loop and pull down. Repeat with all your ribbons. When you’re done, take your rainbow ring outside, and watch it catch the wind! Adding music and dancing is extends the fun too!
Ribbon rainbow rings are so simple, you can make a extra and invite friends over to paint the sky and snack on an edible rainbow! They also make cute party favors.
Like so many moments in Judaism, there is a blessing you can say the next time you see a real rainbow - or a even a ribbon rainbow ring - in the sky. Since the rainbow blessing is about keeping promises, you and your child can each make a promise to each other before saying it!
