DIY: Edible rainbows and marshmallow clouds
Rainbows are as much fun to make as they are to eat!
Over the summer, my daughter Elizabeth and I were taking an early evening walk when it started to drizzle. We saw in front of us, not one but two rainbows! We decided to keep walking, until we walked right underneath to the other side, so we could still see it when we turned around to walk home.
I don’t think it matters what age you are. Seeing a rainbow is pretty special. There’s a rainbow song I love to sing with children that teaches them rainbow colors, and the Hebrew word for rainbow, Keshet.
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink (yes, pink - it’s my song :) )!

It’s a Keshet. It’s a rainbow. A beautiful rainbow in the sky.

It’s a fun activity to make an edible rainbow. For each child, you’ll need, one pipe cleaner, 2 marshmallows and a handfull of colored cereal, like Frootie Tooties or Fruit Loops.
Start by having your child stick one marshmallow on the end of the pipe cleaner. Then, string the cereal - one by one - onto the open end of the pipe cleaner. Leave enough space at the end of the pipe cleaner to stick into the second marshmallow. Then, gently bend the pipe cleaner to form your rainbow. The marshmallow ends become clouds. Stringing cereal on the pipe cleaner is also a great way to help small children with their fine motor skills.
If you’d like, you can recite a blessing before you eat your rainbow. You can say,
Ba-ruch A-tah A-do-noi, Elo-hai-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam, Bo-rai Mi-nai Me-zo-not
