DIY: Unicorn challah

DIY: Unicorn challah

Begin your Shabbat with this magical treat!

Shabbat comes once a week - it’s actually a Jewish holiday that you can celebrate 52 times a year! It’s fun for families to create traditions to mark this special day, like reading a Shabbat book, lighting candles, sipping grape juice, and my favorite - making a unicorn challah for dessert!

Children of all ages love unicorns! They’re colorful, bright, fun-spirited and full of magic! This first Shabbat of the New Jewish Year (5780) feels a little magical, so we’re celebrating by making this delicious challah!

We think it’s fun for everyone to make their own, so instead of one large challah, we buy pre-made egg bread rolls from the bakery. You can start decorating your challah by topping it with pink (or purple or blue) frosting. We like using a Popsicle stick for spreading. Next comes the toppings! Ask your family for their favorites! We used fruit cereal, chocolate chips, candy-coated sunflower seeds and sprinkles (a lot of sprinkles)!

If you’d like, you can say a blessing before eating your challah. In Judaism, there are blessings you can say for almost every moment: when you see a rainbow, when you see something beautiful in nature or when you eat food - like a unicorn challah for dessert!

Ba-Ruch A-tah A-do-noi, Elo-hai-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam, Ha-motzi Leh-chem Min Ha-aretz.

This is a wonderful activity to share with friends! So grab some extra egg bread rolls while you’re at the bakery and invite them over to create a new magical Shabbat tradition! B’tayavon (Enjoy)!
