Apple and honeybee (cupcakes) for a sweet Jewish New Year!

On Rosh Hashanah it’s a tradition to say, “L’shana tovah, have a happy new year. L’shana metukah, have a sweet new year,” and mark the sweetness of a new year with apples dipped in honey! We love finding new and creative ways to include apples and honey in our celebrations (like an apple and honey picnic breakfast)! This year, we decided to dress-up store bought cupcakes and transform them into Rosh Hashanah cupcakes with apple and honeybee cupcake toppers - inspired by red and yellow pom-poms in our craft bin!

You only need a few supplies to make these festive friends (and the apple topper is especially easy for little ones too)! So let’s go make some apple and honeybee toppers!

Honeybee Cupcake Topper

For each honeybee you will need:

  • 2 google eyes

  • Small black pom-pom

  • Small piece of a chenille stem

  • Medium yellow pom-pom

  • Black yarn or embroidery floss

  • 2 small pieces of white felt or tissue paper

  • Glue

  • Small bamboo skewer or toothpick

Here’s how to make this sweet little friend:

1. Start with your medium yellow pom-pom (the honeybee’s body).

2. Glue the black pom-pom (head) on top of the yellow.

3. Glue wiggle eyes on the black pom-pom.

4. Bend the little piece of chenille stem into a “V” shape, and glue it to the top of the black pom-pom.

5. Glue a piece of black yarn around the yellow pom-pom. Our piece was long enough to circle around twice.

6. Glue tissue paper (or felt) wings on top of the pom pom. To make your honeybee into a “topper” place a dab of glue on the bottom of the pom-pom and attach to to the top of a short bamboo skewer or toothpick (hot glue is best for attaching the skewer).

That’s it! A cute little honeybee all ready to top your cupcake!

Now it’s time to make an apple topper (it’s extra simple, yay)! By the way, there’s a sweet Rosh Hashanah song to sing with your children while making your Rosh Hashanah cupcake toppers, and it includes the words…L’shana tovah, a happy new year! L’shana metukah, a sweet new year! L’Shana tovah tikateivu, a happy and a sweet new year to you!

For each apple you will need:

  • Red pom-pom

  • Piece of twine

  • A green leaf cut from felt

  • Glue

Here’s how to make your apple:

Finish your apple off by gluing the bottom of the apple to the top of a small bamboo skewer, and that’s it - a sweet little Rosh Hashanah apple.

Now you’re ready to share your Rosh Hashanah cupcakes with someone you love!

If you’d like, you can say a blessing before eating your Rosh Hashanah cupcake. In Judaism, there are blessings you can say for almost every moment: when you see apples on a tree for the first time in a season, on seeing rainbows and when you eat something sweet - like a cupcake topped with an apple and honeybee!

Ba-Ruch A-tah A-do-noi, Elo-hai-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam, Bo-Rai Mi-nai Me-zo-not.
