DIY: Sukkot dessert table
Share the fall harvest of Sukkot with a dessert sweet table
If there’s one Jewish holiday that I hold near and dear to my heart, it’s Sukkot - a seven day harvest festival, known as the most joyful holiday of the Jewish year! Growing up, we would start getting ready for Sukkot right after Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) with a trip to the apple orchard to bring in our own fall harvest.
Living in Central Florida, our fall harvest looks a little different. We don’t have rows and rows of beautiful trees, ripe with delicious red apples. We have pumpkin patches - lots and lots of pumpkins, and plenty of gourds too!
Gourds might not be as pretty as apples, and they’re not even edible, but they’ve become a part of my family’s Sukkot celebrations. When my girls’ were young, we would read a cute children’s story for Sukkot about a funny little gourd who learned about love, acceptancance and inclusion during Sukkot, right under the sukkah, where everyone is welcome!
The sukkah is meant to be an open tent, and extending hospitality and sharing your “harvest” (or something yummy) with friends and family is what I think makes Sukkot so special. Hospitality is even a Jewish value, Hachnasat Orchim.
My mom and I made our own harvest of little gourd cookies this year, and we shared them with at a small Sukkot dessert party. We made adorable tabletop Sukkot decorations to go with our theme.
You’re invited to grab a plate, and join us at our sukkah dessert!
Our harvest of gourd cookies are the star of our dessert. We also made sure to include apples - apple pie stuffed apple buns - as a special childhood memory of my family’s apple harvest.
Take a look!
Some of the desserts we made include:
Gourd cookies - soft and slightly sweet
Graham cracker sukkah dipped in chocolate and topped with a harvest of dried fruits and nuts
Gourd patch chocolate cupcakes (post coming soon!)
Even though our Sukkot celebrations were small this year, it felt special to dress up our table and share handmade desserts with dear friends.
Our holiday felt extra wonderful this year thanks to my mom and our harvest of little gourd cookies. Are you planning anything special for Sukkot this year? We are filled to the brim with so many ideas! Visit our Sukkot Round-up for more DIYs, recipes and special outings.
Chag Sameach - Happy Sukkot!
